ROOK, the ‘Best Innovative Amateur Beer’ at the Leuven Innovation Beerfestival
Beer has always been there, in plenty of tastes and plenty of colours. At Haspenwood we never thought we would ever produce our own beer but when we discovered that our apple wood could be used to smoke malt, we just had to go for it. The result: ROOK (‘Smoke‘). A recipe by amateur brewer Nico Lugil, inspired by Haspenwood. And rewarded ‘Best Innovative Amateur Beer’ at the Leuven Innovation Beerfestival.
A first limited batch of 2.500 smoked beer bottles has found its way to the Belgian beer fans. If you’re interested in brewing a next batch of ROOK together with us, then give us a call.
Brewer: Nico Lugil
Nico Lugil started brewing 6 years ago, under the brand ‘Vagevuur‘ (‘Purgatory‘). A hobby project in his garage, now with already twenty different beers on his name. Nico is the neighbour of Erik Meylemans, co-founder of Haspenwood, and the idea of brewing a smoked beer soon became one of the conversations at the neighbourhood barbecues.
Brewery Hof ten Dormael
Together with the support of Brewery Hof ten Dormaal, organizer of the Leuven Innovation Beerfestival, we have brewed a first batch of 850 liters of Rook. Ironically this brewery has partially gone up in smoke on January 6, 2015, a fire which destroyed the lagering tanks, the bottling plant, the packaging and other materials.
